FITNESS REHAB: A whole system approach

MAINE’S ONLY POSTURAL RESTORATION CENTER

RESOLVE CHRONIC INJURIES. REGAIN STRENGTH, FITNESS, AND MOBILITY.

For active adults experiencing postural concerns, recurring injuries, or nagging discomfort, there’s often a deeper pattern driving it. Maine’s most qualified continuum of movement specialists work to find and resolve the root cause. We believe everyone can improve the way they feel and the way they move. Fitness Rehab clients gain a comprehensive understanding of their movement bias and learn techniques to unravel patterns of compression and torsion throughout their body. Our approach fills the gap between Physical Therapy and Personal Training by improving postural imbalances and optimizing movement mechanics.

THE EXPERIENCE OF CHRONIC INJURY:

“I want to stay active, but my body keeps breaking down”

“I’ve stopped doing things I love – gardening, golf, and hiking”

“I’ve pulled back from exercise because I don’t know what’s safe anymore”

For individuals who are in need of expert exercise guidance and interested in exploring a different approach toward resolving chronic conditions, we are Maine’s only Postural Restoration Center.

Chronic Conditions that respond well to our approach

  • Chronic Muscle Tension
  • Unresolved and Recurring Discomfort
  • Chronic and Degenerative Joint Issues
  • Low Back Pain
  • Breathing and Postural Concerns
  • Issues of the Neck and Jaw, including Headaches/Migraines/TMJ
  • Hip and Shoulder Impingement

Move toward a full recovery and regain a pain-free, active lifestyle.

How it Works Step by Step:

  1. Initial 90 Minute Assessment : Identify mobility concerns and compensatory strategies. Assess breathing mechanics and body orientation. Determine grounding mechanics and movement patterning issues.
  2. Resolve Chronic Injuries: Focus on pain reduction through better joint centration and a more neutral core. Our total body approach aims to identify root causes of movement dysfunction and provide clients with the tools to rehab effectively for the long term.
  3. Fitness, Strength, and Balance: Our specialists build a customized program with your health history and movement bias in mind. We target specific areas which require added strength and flexibility, with full consideration for pain and movement thresholds.

“I have been in practice for 20 years exclusively doing osteopathic manipulative medicine on patients with a variety of chronic pain and difficult sports-related injuries. Before I met Jeff two years ago, I considered myself an expert on biomechanics. His expertise has influenced the way I think about posture and movement, and the way I practice medicine and teach medical students. His program design is truly different than anything I had previously encountered, and his guidance has helped me to resolve my own chronic right hip and low back problems.”

“Working with Jeff Eckhouse at Back Cove Personal Fitness has been both educational and inspirational, as well as a great addition to my toolbox for maintaining my own health. His use of Postural Restoration is based on a sound understanding of anatomy and physiology. He helped me to see what normal breathing is and the role it plays in strength training, and overall fitness. Postural Restoration as it is taught at Back Cove Personal Fitness, opened doors to a new way of approaching the whole idea of working out. I am grateful.”

Our Fitness Rehab Specialists employ techniques taught by the Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI), which was established to explore and explain the science of postural adaptations, asymmetrical patterns and the influence of muscle activity on our system.

What Our Clients Are Saying

“I started working with Jeff at the recommendation of a friend who’s an orthopedic surgeon. My knee had recovered from surgery but I still felt some pain when doing anything higher impact than walking. I wanted to be able to run again. With Jeff, I learned PRI concepts involving balanced breathing and activating specific muscles to rebuild strength and control. Working out under Jeff’s guidance, the knee pain was eliminated early in each session. I learned how to approach daily exercise to stay active and pain-free. It’s been several months since I’ve worked regularly with Jeff, and I’ve now learned through experience how important it is to keep up the exercises I learned at Back Cove to stay active AND pain-free. Thanks to Jeff, I’ve been able to start running again.” – Tessa Bollinger, Portland

I was experiencing pain in my back, neck, and spine for almost 7 months.  The fitness rehab work I’ve done with Jeff has finally given me the relief I wasn’t able to get from massage or chiropractic treatment. Within 2 months, I made significant strides, and am now able to sit for work and play golf, without discomfort.  I enthusiastically recommend the fitness rehab approach to anyone dealing with unresolved chronic back pain.”  Senator Justin Alfond, Senate Democratic Leader

“When I moved to Maine I specifically looked for a trainer who had experience and knowledge in orthopedic issues.  Jeff is by far the best trainer I have used.  His evaluation was more thorough than my Physical Therapist’s and his program including home exercises pushed me while respecting physical limitations and safety issues. ”  Ann Irving, Biddeford Pool

“Thanks to time spent at Back Cove Personal Fitness, I’ve regained strength, mobility and confidence while recovering from surgery. Cathy Bowden, Falmouth

“I have a long list of injuries from action sports when I was younger, and every time I would go to the gym to get stronger, I inevitably got injured.  Jeff showed me how many of my lingering injuries were all interrelated and caused by posture imbalances and poor breathing technique. His focus on lifting with good form was something I had never seen from any other personal trainer. These were things that I would never notice on my own, but were exactly what was causing my previous injuries in the gym. While working with Jeff I began to get stronger and lift heavier but instead of injuring myself like I did in the past, my constant neck and shoulder pain began to improve.  Jeff, I can’t thank you enough for everything you have taught me. Working with you has truly been life changing!”  Justin Meyer
